A personal journey that led to a healthcare revolution in Ocala and beyond
The Problem We Saw
In 2017, Dr. Michael Chen was working as an internist at a large medical group in Central Florida. Despite his passion for medicine and dedication to patients, he found himself increasingly frustrated with the system.
"I had 7 minutes per patient," Dr. Chen recalls. "Seven minutes to listen to their concerns, examine them, review their history, and develop a care plan. It was impossible to provide the quality of care I knew they deserved."
He watched patients struggle to get appointments, wait weeks to see their doctor, and receive fragmented care that treated symptoms rather than addressing root causes. The system was broken—optimized for volume and billing, not for patient outcomes.
The breaking point came when one of his long‑time patients, a 68‑year‑old woman with diabetes, ended up in the ER with a preventable complication. She had tried to reach Dr. Chen multiple times but couldn't get through the phone system. By the time she was seen, her condition had worsened significantly.
"That's when I knew something had to change. Healthcare shouldn't be this hard."

From Vision to Reality
GWC Medical Opens in Ocala
Dr. Chen opened the first GWC Medical location in Ocala with a simple promise: personalized, accessible primary care. The first 50 members joined within weeks, drawn by the vision of healthcare done differently.
Expanding the Team
Dr. Sarah Williams and Dr. James Rodriguez joined the practice, bringing expertise in family medicine and cardiology. The team grew to serve 500+ members across Ocala and surrounding communities.
Launching Telehealth Statewide
During the pandemic, GWC Medical launched comprehensive telehealth services, making quality primary care accessible to patients across Florida. Virtual visits became a permanent offering.
Lady Lake Location Opens
Growing demand led to the opening of a second location in Lady Lake, expanding access to membership‑based primary care in Central Florida.
B2B Partnerships Launch
GWC Medical began partnering with skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities, and employers to bring personalized primary care to organizations across Florida.
2,500+ Members Strong
Today, GWC Medical serves over 2,500 individual members and partners with 15+ healthcare organizations. Our team of 6 physicians continues to deliver the personalized, accessible care that started it all.
